The Adventures of Robin Hood - Volume 1 (DVD)
Richard Greene played Robin Hood in this British television series (1955-1960), starring as the upbeat and expansive fellow, with a superb small repertory troupe played different supporting roles. The interior backgrounds were mounted on wheels to facilitate fast shooting, and the studio was located near historic Runnymeade Meadow, the ideal locale for the outdoor scenes. Loosely based on the earlier Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn classic films about a forest bandit with a gang that steals from the rich and gives to the poor (that were based on poems and stories dating back 600 years), this children's show remains fondly remembered by those lucky enough to grow up with it.

Monty Python's Life of Brian (DVD)
Monty Python delivers a scathing, anarchic satire of both religion and Hollywood's depiction of all things biblical with their second--and tightest--full-length film. The setting is the Holy Land in 33 A.D., a time of poverty and chaos, with no shortage of messiahs, followers willing to believe in them, and exasperated Romans trying to impose some order. At the center of it all is Brian Cohen (Graham Chapman), a reluctant would-be messiah who rises to prominence as a result of a series of absurd and truly hilarious circumstances that parallel the life of Christ--providing ample opportunity for the entire ensemble (John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Chapman) to shine in multiple roles as they blaspheme and mock everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate, and the art of haggling to crazy prophets, Roman centurions, and crucifixion.
Directed by Python Terry Jones, MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN is an uproarious biblical parody that does...

The Land of Laughs
Along with his somewhat odd girlfriend, a teacher travels to a small Missouri town with the intention of writing a biography of his favorite author, a deceased children's writer named Marshall France. As his research commences, he begins to see evidence that France's writing has bled off of the printed page and onto the real world. Originally published in 1980, this was Carroll's debut novel, and it introduces one of the overriding themes of his early works: that of the ultimate fluidity between the actual and the fictional.

Cathryn (Susannah York) has secluded herself in a remote country home where she hopes to finish writing a children's book. It is in this country house that Cathryn will begin to feel a shift in her life. Reality begins to break down for her as the men in her life become more oppressive. A psychotic break finds Cathryn attempting to kill all these men, although some may already be dead.
This early work from Robert Altman (wrongfully neglected for many years) could be seen as a film typical of its time as it shares a nonlinear kinship with similar disturbing works such as PERSONA, REPULSION, and DON'T LOOK NOW. However, the film is also a masterpiece of atmosphere, conveyed primarily through the score from John Williams and Stomu Yamashta and Vilmos Zsigmond's striking photography. Dense with symbolism and motifs, most notably mirrors, the film is one of Altman's most challenging and offers some of conductor Williams' most subtle work.
