Gullah Night Before Christmas
The newest addition to Pelican's acclaimed Night Before Christmas series anticipates the approaching Gullah craze,
as it has been described by Publishers Weekly. The new children's book is written entirely in Gullah, an English-derived Creole language spoken by some African-American groups on the South Carolina and Georgia coasts. Gullah folklore is incorporated into Clement C. Moore's classic poem, with Buh Fox chasing Buh Rabbit as he tries to distribute his goodies to the children on Christmas Eve. Virginia Mixson Geraty is the world's foremost authority on the Gullah. In addition to serving as Gullah consultant for the British Broadcasting Company on the Story of the English Language,
she is also a Gullah instructor at the College of Charleston, where she received her doctorate in humane letters.

As Saffron attempts to adapt to this information, she is dealt another harsh blow when her beloved grandfather dies. An item bequeathed to her by her grandfather sets Saffron on an adventure which eventually connects her with her own past. Named one of the Best Children's Books 2002 by Publishers Weekly.

The Land of Laughs
Along with his somewhat odd girlfriend, a teacher travels to a small Missouri town with the intention of writing a biography of his favorite author, a deceased children's writer named Marshall France. As his research commences, he begins to see evidence that France's writing has bled off of the printed page and onto the real world. Originally published in 1980, this was Carroll's debut novel, and it introduces one of the overriding themes of his early works: that of the ultimate fluidity between the actual and the fictional.

Toys (DVD)
Robin Williams stars in this surreal antiwar fantasy directed by Barry Levinson (RAIN MAN, DINER). Williams plays Leslie Zevo, the son of a fun-loving toymaker. Leslie and his sister, Alsatia (Joan Cusack,) grew up surrounded by their father's whimsical creations in the fantastic factory that he built. When their father dies, the children find that he has left his beloved business in the hands of his brother, a warmonger general (Michael Gambon), thinking that despite his children's love of the company, they don't have minds for business. Unable to disregard his military sensibilities, the general embarks on his own secret project in an effort to make toys that fulfill his confrontational nature, developing video games for children that actually control live weapons. Upon discovering their uncle's diabolical plan, Leslie and Alsatia set out to stop the general in his tracks and save their father's dream factory from manufacturing lethal weapons. Levinson's interesting social commentary...
